THE WORLD BY THUMB
100% hitchhiking - 100% world tour - Since 2013 - By Florence Renault
AFRICA
2019-2021
We hitchhiked a speedboat from Jordan to reach Egypt , our first African country, in May 2019. Then I hitchhiked on my own across Sudan and met my boyfriend Sebastian again in Ethiopia . We headed down to Kenya where we spent a month house-sitting. We traveled through Uganda , Rwanda , Tanzania , Zambia , Zimbabwe , Botswana , South Africa , Lesotho and again South Africa where we took care of dogs for a month. After crossing the Namibian desert, I hitchhiked on my own again through Angola , Congo Brazzaville and Cameroon where I got stuck from March, 16th 2020 because of covid-19 borders closure. My boyfriend Sebastian was stuck in New Zealand and managed to join me in July 2020. After eight months stranded in Cameroon, I no longer supported to wait and I decided to keep hitchhiking on my own to the landborder which is officially closed. I spent the worst three months of my trip in Nigeria. When I was about to leave this country, I got arrested by the police for four days and then they confiscated my passport for two months. Stuck in Lagos, I tried to find options to hitchhike a boat or a plane. Finally, the police announced me that I could get my passport back only if I would leave Nigeria by plane. Shortly after, Royal Air Maroc agreed to offer me a ticket to Morocco. This is how I hitchhiked a plane to Casablanca and met my boyfriend Sebastian again. We hitchhiked for three months through Morocco. Due to a new wave of pandemic, the country decided to close (again) its borders. We are stuck (again) here and are waiting for the reopening of the borders in Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast. I only have 2,500 kilometers left to travel to reach my hometown, Orléans, and conclude my hitchhiking world tour .
