THE WORLD BY THUMB

100% hitchhiking - 100% world tour - Since 2013 - By Florence Renault

CHINA

Yunnan & Sichuan from May, 4th to June 12th, 2018

Shanghai Silk Road to Urumqui from July, 23rd to August, 21st 2018

China is a country full of contrasts, like this photo album: punk with Buddhism, historical heritage with concrete buildings, straw roofs in the countryside and skyscrapers in the city, Taoist priests and Uighur imams, the Hani minorities in Yunnan and Tibetans in Sichuan ...

In all subjectivity, I love (since I was a child) this country and I was happy to come back. After five years of hitchhiking world tour, this is the country where communication has been the most difficult. Fortunately, the helpfulness and curiosity of the Chinese compensated for the language barrier and finally hitchhiking went easily!

Coming from Vietnam , I first spent a month in the rural mountainous regions of Yunnan and Sichuan, right up to the gates of Tibet. I then joined Shanghai to hitchhike a ferry to Japan . On my way back, I met my brother in Beijing and we crossed China from east to west, putting our thumbs up in the Gobi desert and Uyghur lands, on the Silk Road. I continued my journey towards Kazakhstan .
